Yunnan Gold Mine – Beijun UQ-12 Narrow-Body Truck for 3.2m Tunnels

Client Background

Beijun Narrow-Body Truck

The client is a large gold mining operation in Yunnan Province, China. The mine uses underground mining methods, and its main haulage tunnels are only 3.2 meters wide. This is a common situation in older Chinese gold mines where tunnel dimensions were set decades ago, before modern equipment sizes were a consideration. The mine needed haulage trucks that could fit through these narrow passages without sacrificing payload or safety.

Challenges Faced

Tunnel width is the hard limit: At 3.2 meters, the tunnels leave very little margin for error. Standard underground trucks are too wide. Operators have to thread the needle on every pass, and wall collisions are a constant risk.

Brake fade on long declines: The mine has long downhill hauls. The previous trucks used dry brakes that overheated and lost stopping power on sustained descents. This was both a safety issue and a productivity issue — drivers had to slow down or stop to let brakes cool.

Frame durability: The tunnel floors are uneven and abrasive. Frames on the old fleet developed cracks, leading to unplanned downtime and expensive repairs.

Availability had to be high: The mine runs continuous production shifts. Any truck that spends time in the shop instead of on the ramp directly cuts into output.

Beijun Solution

Beijun Narrow-Body Truck

Beijun supplied 20 units of the UQ-12 underground dump truck, a 12-ton model designed with a narrow body specifically for tight tunnel conditions. The UQ-12 uses the proven Yuchai engine + Fast transmission + Hande axle powertrain, paired with Beijun's own wet brake system and a cold-riveted 700L high-strength steel frame.

The cab is FOPS/ROPS certified. The wet brake system is fully enclosed and oil-cooled, which means dust and moisture stay out and heat stays under control. That matters on long declines, where dry brakes fade and wet brakes keep working.

Beijun also optimized the steering geometry for the narrow-tunnel application. The turning radius is tighter than standard models, which reduces the number of maneuvers needed to navigate corners and reduces the chance of wall contact.

Implementation Results

Beijun Narrow-Body Truck

Six months, no brake fade: After half a year of continuous operation, the wet brake system showed no heat fade on the long downhill hauls. Drivers reported consistent stopping power shift after shift. The brake reliability was the single biggest improvement over the previous fleet.

Failure rates below industry average: The UQ-12 fleet ran with a failure rate below the industry benchmark for similar operations. The cold-riveted frame held up to the abrasive tunnel floors without the cracking issues that plagued the old trucks.

Customer ordered more: After six months of operation, the mine placed an additional order for 10 more UQ-12 units. That repeat order is the clearest signal that the trucks are doing what they were bought to do.

Fits the tunnels: The narrow-body design allowed the trucks to operate in the 3.2-meter tunnels without the wall collision problems the mine had experienced with wider equipment. The tighter turning radius reduced maneuvering time at corners.

Client Feedback

"The UQ-12 fits our tunnels. That sounds simple, but it was the main problem we had with other trucks. The wet brakes give our drivers confidence on the long declines, and we are not stopping to let brakes cool anymore. The frames are holding up. We ordered ten more because the trucks are working." — Mine Equipment Manager, Yunnan Gold Operation
